Listed on this page are software and hardware products we have used that have performed very well when commissioned, and we would therefore recommend to clients. These products will give you some idea of the sort of software/hardware you might need to engineer your optimal IT Solution and a reasonable idea of budget required - please use our recommendations to get an idea of what you might need and what it will cost. Obviously we can not list all manufacturers and a listing does not guarantee they are necessarily the best choice in all situations or guarantee their performance or effectiveness. We have no affiliation with any hardware manufacturer. We are Microsoft Partners and GFi resellers. Please contact us if you need any more help with deciding what it is you might need to get for your infrastructure.

Server hardware for Windows, Exchange and other applications

Most datacenters prefer to rack their servers, but both Dell and HP do similar free-standing servers to the ones mentioned if you do not have racking.

Small rack mounted server for the smaller non-clustered Exchange installation or for example, a dedicated mail bridgehead or OWA front-end server. Also suitable for a general purpose Windows infrastructure or application server.

As an example Dell make the Powerdedge 2850. It is only 2U rack height and can contain up to 5 one inch hot-plug SCSI drives (click on image). HP make the ProLiant range of servers with similar specifications. For example the ProLiant DL380 G3.

Larger rack mounted server for homing large amounts of users on, or forming clusters. These will have more processing power, and will attach to external storage, typically a SCSI cabinet (like the Dell Powervault 220S) or attach to a fibre channel based SAN.

Dell make the Powerdege 6650 and HP offer the ProLiant DL580 G2. Please click the pictures to be taken to their web-sites for more information.

The ProLiant DL380 G4 Packaged Cluster with MSA500 G2 is a "packaged" cluster. It is a complete, 8U cluster package, which simplifies the purchase, configuration and management of high availability clusters. If you need a readily available and simple to configure cluster either for Exchange or other Microsoft applications, this may be worth considering.

Firewall devices for Internet Security

Connection to the Internet can be a security concern. If ISA Server isn't enough or you haven't got a server to install it on there are many good dedicated hardware firewall devices.

For small to midsize businesses (up to 5,000 users), Watchguard make the Firebox range of firewalls. They are good value and easy to configure. They now have an enterprise level offering as well, the new Firebox Vclass.

Another well regarded maker of firewalls is Checkpoint, who have products for small business, mid-sized business and for enterprise level customers.

Anti-Virus products for Microsoft Exchange

There are several good quality products available and to some extent the choice will depend on budget and the size of the user base. Please see our add-ons page for a listing of good vendors. We have found the product from Sybari, Antigen to be extremely good.

Content Checking for Microsoft Exchange

If you need to automatically check email content and attachments, to quarantine dangerous or undesirable emails there are several products that will do this. GFi do GFi MailSecurity - easy to set up and effective. Another very good product that is extensively deployed is Mailsweeper, part of the Mimesweeper range of products made by Clearswift

Disclaimer Products for Microsoft Exchange

The choice here depends on whether you want a simple disclaimer product or something that performs other functions as well. The best value product that simply does disclaimers is probably eXclaimer. Other software to consider is Policy Patrol Disclaimers and GFi MailEssentials.

Fax Server products for Microsoft Exchange

Faxing is still important. The simplest faxing solution we have found is GFiFAXmaker. This product is very easy to install and configure.

Exchange Server Monitoring Software

If you need providing comprehensive event management, proactive monitoring and alerting, reporting, and trend analysis of your installed server base, there are probably only tow products to choose between. Either Microsoft Operations Manager or the industry leader for some time, netIQ's AppManager.

Exchange Server Reporting Software

The product we really like for this is Hypersoft's Omnianalyser. It gives information on your corporate messaging infrastructure, server availability and health, complete email metrics, information store, public folders, replication and database contents. For customers who need to know what mail is going where with comprehensive reports and monitor SLA's, this is a good choice.

Spam Control Software

GFi MailEssentials is a good choice for most companies - it performs very well and is good value. Another good product we can recommend is Clearswift's anti-spam Mailsweeper for SMTP.
